Phlebotomy Technician Training

Phlebotomy Technician Certification Program with Clinical Externship
This 90 hour Phlebotomy Technician Program prepares professionals to collect blood specimens from clients for the purpose of laboratory analysis.  Students will become familiar with all aspects related to blood collection and develop comprehensive skills to perform venipunctures completely and safely. Classroom and lab work includes terminology, anatomy and physiology; blood collection procedures; specimen hands-on practice; and training in skills and techniques to perform puncture methods.   

National Certification:   Students who complete this program will have the opportunity to pursue the National Healthcareer Association (NHA) Phlebotomy Technician (CPT) Exam.

Clinical Externship: This program includes a 40 hour clinical externship opportunity. To be eligible for the clinical, students must successfully complete the 90 hour program, submit to a thorough background check, drug screening and meet other requirements

Student Tuition: $1,799 (Textbooks included)

Surgicial Technician Training

Surgical Technician Training Program
This comprehensive 70-hour course will cover the surgical technician’s role beginning from pre-op preparation, during the operative procedure and finish with post-operative room break down. This course covers the following key areas and topics – The history of surgery; introduction to the operating room; the legal aspects of surgery and the surgical technician; policies and guidelines: introduction to human anatomy, surgical instruments, operating room equipment, operation, and maintenance; introduction to patient preparation; as well as other key concepts.

Note: The objectives of this class do not include a state or national certification – which generally requires at least 2 years of formal education.

 Student Tuition: $1,599 (Textbooks included)

Medical Billing and Coding Training

Medical Billing and CodingMedical Billing and Coding Program
This combined 80 hour billing and coding course offers the skills needed to solve insurance billing problems, how to manually file claims (using the CPT and ICD-10 manual), complete common insurance forms, trace delinquent claims, appeal denied claims and use generic forms to streamline billing procedures.  The course covers the following areas: CPT (Introduction, Guidelines, Evaluation and Management), specialty fields (such as surgery, radiology and laboratory), ICD-10 (Introduction and Guidelines) and basic claims processes for medical insurance and third party reimbursements.  Students will learn how to find the service and codes using manuals, (CPT, ICD-10 and HCPCS). 

National Certification:  After obtaining the practical work experience (6months to 2 years), students who complete this course could be qualified to sit for the American Academy of Professional Coders (AAPC) - Certified Professional Coder Exam (CPC) or Certified Outpatient Coder Exam (COC); the American Health Information Association (AHIMA) Certified Coding Associate (CCA) exam; and/or other National Certification Exams

NWCA National Certification:  This program meets the necessary requirements to take the National Workforce Career Association (NWCA) Medical Billing & Coding Specialist (MBCS) Exam

Pennsylvania’s State System of Higher Education (PASSHE) and Google are partnering to offer Google Career Certificates to thousands of for-credit and non-credit students. This new online initiative is open to PASSHE students and the community to help thousands of people get the skills for some of the most in-demand jobs.   

Google Career Certificates​ prepare people with skills for jobs in cybersecurity, data analytics, digital marketing and e-commerce ​, IT Support, project management and user experience (UX) design.

Commercial Driver's License (CDL) Training - Scholarships Available!

The Commercial Driver's License (CDL) Scholarship
This pilot scholarship has been designed to support the educational aspirations of and provide financial support for students seeking Commercial Driver's License credentials at one of the PASSHE Commonwealth University campuses - Bloomsburg, Lock Haven, Clearfield or Mansfield.  Recipients will be a broader non-traditional student population, seeking credentials for occupations in the trucking industry.  Maximum award is 90% of the financial support for cost of tuition (including certification costs) and requires a 10% student match.  

Classes start on a Rolling Admission basis.

Purpose:  The purpose of this pilot scholarship is to support the educational aspirations of and provide financial support for students seeking Commercial Driver's License (CDL) credentials at one of the PASSHE Commonwealth University campuses - Bloomsburg, Lock Haven, Clearfield or Mansfield.  

Amount: 90% of course and credentials up to $5,700 per course for CDL students.

Eligibility:
• Individuals must be accepted at a PASSHE Commonwealth University Institution for the Commercial Driver's License credentials course
• Individuals must have paid a deposit and provided proof of funding for the 10% match
• First priority to individuals who demonstrate financial need, veterans, and non-traditional students.

Clinical Medical Assistant Training - Scholarships Available

The Clinical Medical Assistant certification course from Commonwealth University is designed to prepare students to function as professionals in multiple healthcare settings. Medical assistants with a clinical background perform various clinical tasks including assisting with the administration of medications and with minor procedures, performing an EKG electrocardiogram, obtaining laboratory specimens for testing, educating patients, and other related tasks. Job opportunities are prevalent with physician’s offices, clinics, chiropractor’s offices, hospitals and outpatient facilities.

This program prepares learners to assist physicians by performing functions related to the clinical aspects of a medical office. Instruction includes preparing patients for examination and treatment, routine laboratory procedures, pharmacology, taking and documenting vital signs, technical aspects of phlebotomy, the 12-lead EKG and the cardiac life cycle. The purpose of the Clinical Medical Assisting certification course is to prepare learners to assist physicians by performing functions related to the clinical aspects of a medical office.

National Healthcareer Association (NHA)After completing this program, learners will have the option to take the leading national/industry-recognized certification exams essential to entry-level employment in this fast-growing field.
 National Healthcareer Association (NHA) Certified Clinical Medical Assistant (CCMA)

Learners who complete this program are eligible to participate in an optional volunteer externship opportunity with a local company/agency/organization whose work aligns with this area of study in order to gain valuable hands-on experience.  As learners progress through their eLearning program, an Externship Coordinator will reach out to coordinate placement.

Note: Additional documentation including health records, immunizations, drug-screening, criminal background checks, etc. may be required by the externship facility.

CNC Machinist Pre-Apprentice Training

CNC Machinist Pre-Apprentice Training 
Commonwealth University Workforce Development will be partnering with Keystone Central Career and Technology Center to offer four pre-apprenticeship training opportunities.  These four training sessions will be offered during the fall 23 and spring 24 semester at the KCSD Career and Technology Center.

Participants who complete any 3 of the four listed classes will receive a CNC Machinist Pre-Apprentice Certificate from Keystone Central Career & Technical Center. Classes will meet face to face with a certified instructor one evening per week, 4 hour duration, for 10 weeks. Students will be given the opportunity to test programs utilizing simulators. All resources are included. Attendance and performance standard required. Students are encouraged to bring a flash drive to store their work.

Commonwealth University, in collaboration with our training and education partners, offers a variety of certificate programs designed to provide the skills necessary to acquire professional level positions and/or industry-recognized certifications, for many in-demand occupations. 

Our programs are designed by a team of professionals from each respective field, providing you with effective face-to-face and web-based learning programs. Instructors/course mentors are actively involved in your learning experience, responding to any questions or concerns, as well as encouraging and motivating you to succeed. Our training options include:

Financial Aid
Financial Aid is available through the SallieMae Smart Option Student Loan program.  Visit the SallieMae website and search for Commonwealth University of PA Workforce Development. Our School ID is 003315-97.

We do not offer payment plans directly through Commonwealth University.  However, some of our vendors offer payment plans that you might be able to utilize.  

Please contact your local PA CareerLink to inquire about WIOA, TAA or OVR funding availability for workforce development training programs.

  • 100% refund up to 3 days prior to start date
  • 50% refund within 3 days of the start date
  • 0 refund after class start date

Act 48
Commonwealth University is an approved provider for Act 48 hours.  We are currently offering online courses through our third-party collaborations. Pre-approved Act 48 courses can be found under the Ed2Go category of Teacher Professional Development.

In order to receive Act 48 hours for any a non-credit course or to check if your course qualifies for Act 48, please contact tallen@commonwealthu.edu before registering.
