Academic Advising: The Starting Point

AdvisingAcademic advising is a critical component of any college student's experience.  Students at LHU are strongly encouraged to see their advisor several times each academic year.  Regular meetings with your advisor can provide valuable information pertaining to academic programs, individual academic progress, university support services, and ultimately, the entire college experience.  Althouth your academic advisor assists you with decisions throughout your academic career, YOU are ultimately responsible for satisfying all graduation requirements.  

The primary purpose of academic advising is to assist students in the development of meaningful educational plans...compatible with their life goals.

Academic advising should be viewed as a continuous process of clarification and evaluation.  

Who is my advisor?

Advisor assignements are found under the Student tab of myHaven.  A student's advisor assignment can be changed by the Chairperson of the Department where the major is housed.  

How do I meet my advisor?

The online Faculty and Staff Directory provides information such as office location, phone number, email address.  Faculty post a schedule of classes and office hours on their office door.  Students can arrange a meeting during office hours by telephone, email, or by leaving a note with the department secretary requesting an appointment at another time.

How can my advisor help me?

Your advisor will help you understand the requirements of your degree program as well as consider and select courses to assure progress toward a degree.  The selection of elective coures should also be discussed to widen your educational horizon, bolster areas of weakness, enhance strengths, develop a concentration of courses, or to supplement your major and thereby assist in increasing your career choices.  You (and your advisor) can view your academic record through myHaven's Student tab.  Your academic record has a list of all courses completed and those in which you are currently enrolled, grade point average, and other pertinent academic information.  If you have questions about your credits or grades, you should see your advisor.  Your advisor can refer you to the appropriate office and/or people for information on career possiblities, special programs, summer oportuniities, etc.

Your Role as the AdviseeMajors Fair

  • Become familiar with your advisor's office hours early in the semester.
  • Schedule an appointment with your advisor early in the semester.
  • Develop social, academic, and career goals and examine how these goals will affect your life.
  • Be preapred for the advising session.  Have an idea of the courses you plan to take and be able to discuss your interests, values, and goals with your advisor.
  • Accept responsibility for your academic choices and other decisions.
  • Maintain notes on each advising session.
  • Follow through with appropriate action after the advising sessions.
  • Be knowledgeable about academic standards, policies and procedures.
  • Become familiar with general education, major program, and graduation requirements.
  • Learn how to use available resources at LHU.
  • Gather all relevant decision-making information. 
  • Consult with your advisor when you are in academic difficulty.
  • Consult with your advisor before chaning a major, declaring a major, taking a leave of absence, or withdrawing from the University.
  • Know the academic calendar.  Don't miss deadlines.  Know when to schedule and drop or add courses.
  • Become knowledgeable about financial aid guidelines and the impact on academic progress.

The Role of your Advisor

  • Create an atmosphere of openness, caring, and concern where meaningful communication and trust exist.
  • Help students to clarify their values and goals.
  • Assist advisees when they are not achieving in accordance with their abilities, helping them plan activities to correct their difficulties.
  • Provide proactive assistance to the academically underprepared student.
  • Assist advisees in identifying career goals and objectives.
  • Attempt to understand advisees' concerns from a student point of view.
  • Make students aware of the full range of educational opportunities that are appropriate to their plans.
  • Help students in academic difficulty recognize possible causes of their difficulty and suggest alternative courses of action.
  • Encourage superior students to take advantage of special educational oportunities, i.e. interdiscipliniary courses, honors program, etc. Encourage them to explore double majors/minors, etc.
  • Encourage first-year students to become involved with departmental clubs and campus activities.
  • Schedule, post, and keep regular office hours for meetings with advisees.
  • Set aside enough regularly scheduled time to adequately meet the advising needs of students assigned to them.
  • Know University academic standards, policies and procedures in sufficient detail to provide students with accurate, useable information.
  • Provide accurate information about general education requirements, academic programs, and graduation requirements.
  • Refer students to other sources of information and assistance when referral seems to be the best student-centered response to be made.
  • Maintain good records of conferences with advisees.
  • Become familiar with the Buckley Amendment and the legal implications of academic advising.
  • Maintain confidentiality of student records consistent with the requirements of the Buckley Amendment.
  • Share his/her advising skills with new departmental faculty who may also be activitely involved with advising.
  • Actively participate in departmental and university-wide in-service advisor development programs.
  • Encouage student feedback on the effectiveness of his/her advising.
  • Become knowledgeable about financial aid guidelines and the impact on academic progress.
