Residence Hall Break Closing and Reopening

Important Information

It's important for students living in on-campus housing to know the dates and procedures for residence hall openings and closings throughout the academic year.  Please contact your Residence Hall Director for more information.

Residence Hall Closings and Reopenings

The residence halls close for the following breaks during the academic year:

  • Fall Break - Thanksgiving Holiday
  • Winter Break
  • Spring Break

Students living in on-campus housing (except for Campus Village Apartments) must leave prior to the closure of the residence halls. Only students who receive prior permission from Student & Residence Life are permitted to be in the residence halls when closed for breaks. Failure to leave on time and/or staying without permission may result in student conduct and/or residence facility violations.

Mail delivery and meal services are not available during breaks. After the halls close, no student may re-enter until the designated reopening day and time.

2021-2022 Academic Year Scheduled Breaks

Fall Break - Thanksgiving Holiday (November 23-26, 2021)

Residence halls will close at 6:00 p.m. on Monday, November 22, 2021. The last meal served before the break will be dinner in Upper Bentley from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. on that same day. Additional details regarding how students should properly prepare their room/suite/apartment prior to departure will be sent via LHU e-mail in early November.

The residence halls will reopen on Sunday, November 28, 2021, at 12:00 p.m. Student ID access will be deactivated and no one will be permitted to enter the residence halls before this time.  Students should plan their return to campus accordingly.

Winter Break (December 13, 2021-January 23, 2022)

Students should depart 24 hours after their last final of the fall semester.  The last meal served before the break will be dinner in Upper Bentley from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. that same day. Residence halls will close, and all hall access will be turned off for the semester, on Friday, December 10, 2021, at 6:00 p.m.

Before leaving for Winter Break, students will need to complete a closing checklist to properly prepare their room/suite/apartment for the break and turn in their room key to their Residence Hall Director's office for safe keeping. It is important to note that turning in a room key does not mean the student has checked out of the residence hall. Housing agreements apply to the entire 2021-2022 academic year.

Students returning for the Spring 2022 semester do not need to move out of their residence hall room for the Winter break. Please make sure to take all essential and valuable items. Student and Residence Life and Public Safety will not grant access for students to retrieve personal items after the closing of the residence halls. The University does not guarantee the security of property left in the residence halls and does not carry insurance that compensates residents for losses due to fire, theft, water damage, etc.

Additional details regarding how to properly prepare your room/suite/apartment prior to your departure will be sent to your LHU e-mail in mid-to-late November.

Spring Break (March 14, 2022-March 18, 2022)

Residence halls will close at 6:00 p.m. on Friday, March 11, 2022. The last meal served before the break will be dinner in Upper Bentley from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. on that same day. Additional details regarding how students should properly prepare their room/suite/apartment prior to departure will be sent via LHU e-mail in late February.

The residence halls will reopen on Sunday, March 20, 2022, at 12:00 p.m. Student ID access will be deactivated and no one will be permitted to enter the residence halls before this time.  Students should plan their return to campus accordingly.

End-of-Year Closing

All students are expected to vacate their room within 24-hours of their last exam.  The final closing of the Residence Halls is Thursday, May 12, 2022, at 6:00 p.m.  Students participating in the commencement ceremonies or who are unable to depart by this time should contact their Residence Hall Director to discuss their options. Graduating seniors are automatically approved to remain in the residence halls until after the commencement ceremonies.

Students must see a Resident Assistant or Residence Hall Director to checkout and turn in their keys. Failure to do so may result in an improper checkout fee. Additional details will be emailed to students' LHU email address in mid-to-late-April.
